The following applies only to
Extramon installed on Vista computers.
The
Extramon video driver cannot be installed alongside
a WDDM video driver (i.e., on a computer with the Aero
user interface, which gives you the fancy graphical
effects that are new to Vista). This means that if you
want to extend the desktop of a computer running Windows
Vista that has a WDDM display driver, you must first
change (downgrade) to the standard VGA video driver,
which means that the Aero user interface will not work,
nor will high-performance video applications such as
TV, DVD, some games, etc. This is due to limitations
of the Vista WDDM video driver model. This downgrading
solution might or might not be acceptable to you.
You can use Extramon with a combination of XP computer
and Vista computer, even if the Vista computer has the
WDDM driver problem described above. You will be able
to extend the desktop of the XP computer, but the Vista
computer will remain a single-monitor computer.
How
to Change to the Standard VGA Video Driver
This
procedure is for Vista computers only.
Right-click
on the desktop and select Personalize - Display Settings
- Advanced - Adapter - Properties - Driver - Update.
Select
Standard VGA Driver from the list. The computer
must be restarted for the change to take effect.
Once
you have restarted the computer, you can press Start
on the Extramon main window to extend your desktop.
This will install the Extramon video driver.
You
can change your computer back to the original WDDM video
driver at any time (although you will lose the Extramon
functionality). It is recommended that you disable the
Extramon video driver at the same time. Otherwise, the
next time you restart your computer, Windows will give
you a warning message saying that one of your video
drivers (the Extramon driver) is not compatible, and
that it has disabled it for you.
