Windows
Vista
There are limitations related to running Extramon on
a Vista computer with a WDDM video driver (i.e., the
Aero user interface). See this
page for details.
There are also limitations to running Extramon on a
Vista x64 computer. See the Download
page for details.
'Printer name is invalid' error
A problem has been reported when you try to extend the
desktop and you receive the error message "The
video mode could not be changed. The printer name is
invalid." This problem has been solved by closing
Visual Studio 2008 and trying again.
NOD32
Anti-Virus
NOD32 crashes Extramon in a random manner. To fix the
problem, place Extramon on the NOD32 exclusion list.
1. Open the NOD32 Control Center.
2. Select IMON then Setup, to open the IMON Setup dialog.
3. Under Advanced Setup, press Setup.
4. Under Exclusion, press Edit.
5. Press Add, and select Extramon.exe (usually located
in C:\Program Files\Extramon)
6. Close the series of dialogs by pressing OK on each
one.
NOD32's IMON module (Internet monitor) will no longer
monitor Extramon's network access, which will prevent
the crash from happening.
Problem using Remote Desktop Client
A problem occurs when you are running Remote Desktop
client in full-screen mode on your primary computer.
When you move the mouse pointer to an adjacent monitor,
the mouse works fine and you can click on windows as
expected, but your keypresses continue to go to the
remote computer. The problem does not occur if you are
using Remote Desktop in a window.
To fix the problem, you must use Extramon 3.31 or later.
Add the following line to the end of the Extramon.ini
file, located in C:\Program Files\Extramon. Then restart
Extramon.
CompatibleWithRemoteDesktopClient=1
This fix works only while the Extramon main window is
hidden. This is okay, since you always want the main
window hidden while you are working.
Copying Files
Using Windows XP, you cannot copy a file contained within
a .zip file and paste it directly to another computer.
Instead, paste it to a temporary location on the original
computer, then cut and paste it to the other computer.
DirectX
(DirectDraw)
Some applications that do high-performance video rendering
using the DirectX API are not compatible with Extramon.
A workaround may be to disable hardware acceleration
on your video card (do this from Windows' Display Properties
dialog), although the application may simply fail if
a DirectX-compatible video device is not found on your
computer.
Screen Not Refreshing
A customer reported a problem with an Nvidia Riva Tnt2
Pro video card. When controlling the computer remotely
and moving the mouse around the screen, the video would
appear in blocks. Reducing the card's hardware acceleration
fixed the problem. A further problem, where menus like
the Windows Start menu were not being drawn properly,
was fixed by disabling the secondary's hardware acceleration
altogether. Disabling hardware acceleration has no effect
on the computer's performance when you're controlling
it remotely.
Unplugged the Mouse and Now it Doesn't Work
For computers running Windows 2000 or 2000 Server, it
is necessary to leave a mouse plugged in, otherwise
Windows assumes you have no mouse and does not display
a pointer.
For computers running Windows XP or later, it is okay
to unplug the mouse.
